Event: Queen Bee Moms and Kingpin Dads
Hosted by Scituate's Community of Concern
The primary goal of Scituate's Community of Concern is to encourage us parents to have honest conversations about how we guide our children through the adolescent years and the decisions they face about using drugs and alcohol. What better way to foster communication then to discuss the excellent book, "Queen Bee Moms and Kingpin Dads" by Rosalind Wiseman? This insightful book discusses the various parenting styles and attitudes that exist among our peer group, and how these various styles affect they way in which we guide our teens' decision making. Reading the book helps us to thoughtfully and gently consider our own identity as a parent, and to evaluate how much of our parenting style is influenced by social pressures from other adults. Whether you have children in elementary, middle school or high school, there is a message for each of us to consider as our children approach or enter the risky and high stakes teen years.
The Book Discussion Group will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Scituate Town Library. We are priveleged to have Parenting Consultant, Author, and Fox News Parenting Expert Lynne Griffin of Proactive Parenting lead the discussion. This program is free and open to the public.
Even if you find that you do not have enough time to finish or even read the book, the evening still promises an enlightening discussion. Please join us! The book may be purchased at Front Street Book Shop in Scituate for a 15% discount if you mention that it is for this Discussion Group. Questions? Call 781-545-5688. Thank you!

In Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads, Rosalind Wiseman gives us the tools to handle difficult situations involving teachers and other parents with grace. Reassuring, funny, and unfailingly honest, Wiseman reveals:
- Why PTA meetings and Back-to-School nights tap into parents' deepest insecurities
- How to recognize the archetypal moms and dads-from Caveman Dad to Hovercraft Mom
- How and when to step in and step out of your child's conflicts with other children, parents, teachers, or coaches
- How to interpret the code phrases other parents use to avoid (or provoke) confrontation
- Why too many well-meaning dads sit on the sidelines, and how vital it is that they step up to the plate
- What to do and say when the playing field becomes an arena for people to bully and dominate other kids and adults
- How to have respectful yet honest conversations with other parents about sex and drugs when your values are in conflict
- How the way you handle parties, risky behavior, and academic performance affects your child
- How unspoken assumptions about race, religion, and other hot-button subjects sabotage parents' ability to work together
